New criteria now offers crisis support within a week of use or for those at risk of relapse
STERLING HEIGHTS, Mich. (June 15, 2026) – Macomb County Community Mental Health (MCCMH) has expanded eligibility for its Substance Use Engagement Center, allowing individuals who have used substances within the past week or who are at risk of relapse to access support services.
Previously, individuals had to use substances within the past 48 hours to receive services. By extending this timeframe and including individuals at risk of relapse, the Engagement Center is better positioned to respond to the evolving needs of the community and remove barriers to timely care.
“The need for support doesn’t always fit within a narrow timeframe,” said Nicole Gabriel, MCCMH Director of Substance Use Services. “This update reflects a more flexible, person-centered approach, allowing us to step in sooner and meet people where they are in their recovery journey.”
In partnership with CARE of Southeastern Michigan, the Engagement Center provides 24/7 peer-led, short-term crisis intervention in a safe and welcoming environment. Individuals can stabilize, meet basic needs such as meals and showers, and connect with treatment providers and community resources that support long-term recovery.
“MCCMH’s decision to expand service eligibility for the Substance Use Engagement Center reinforces our joint commitment in responding to the behavioral health needs of our community members,” adds President and CEO for CARE of Southeastern Michigan, Susan Styf. “The goal is always to increase and improve access to support, providing the necessary resources for people to lead healthy, resilient, and substance-free lives.”
Since opening on October 28, 2025, the Engagement Center has served more than 70 individuals, with 65% of individuals linked to treatment after visiting the facility. The Engagement Center is located at 38300 Van Dyke, Suite 101, Sterling Heights, MI 48312, and is funded through a combination of state grants, local funding, and opioid settlement funds.
Individuals seeking services must first contact the MCCMH Crisis Line for screening and referral. The Crisis Line is available 24/7 at 586-307-9100.
